Funeral and Things
16 January 2009 3:36 pm
Yesterday was the funeral of bf's grandad. It was quite a long trip but all went well considering.
It was freezing cold at the cremotorium as we were the first to arrive. The service was due to begin at 9.30 and we got there just after 9.10am. That was good going since bf and myself had been on the road since 6.45am.
The service started late and we were all quite shocked that the whole thing was completely impersonal. I've only been to 2 funerals and at both, they gave a good reflection of the persons life, thier family and what they enjoyed. This was just a case of religious texts read from a plastic binder - not even a bible. Bf's grandfather wasn't even religious! We all passed comment on how it seemed so clinical and that it could have been anyone's funeral as it was only his name being mentioned a few times that gave it any indication as to who we were actually there for. It was not a good place or service at all and I don't think bf's mum was too happy with it.
James lightened the mood though. A baby in a place like this always seems to lighten the mood and everyone smiled at us when James decided to give the biggest burp imaginable during one of the readings.
Bf did get upset a couple of times but in all he did really well. His mum handled it very well until the curtains began to close and it was around that point I got rather upset. I didn't know the man but it made me think how things could have been at my nan's funeral. I would like to visit my nans grave sometime this year to pay the respects I never got to give at her funeral.
We went back to bf's aunts house for a little while. Bf's mum and sister had not really spoken for around 20 odd years due to a complete character clash but they were both civilised enough for one day and made us all feel very welcome.
We were home in time to collect Matthew from school and we were rather worn out by early evening.
Today bf is working, Matthew is at my grandparents and I've had a productive day. A grocery shopping trip, Sharon and Isabel came round. I've booked James' 12 week jabs for January 27th and I've been onto the Child Support Agency as I did not get Matthews money from his dad last week. It normally goes direct into my bank but I noticed it hadn't gone in when they said. I phoned up and it turns out I was last paid on December 7th and I am due a little backlog of money. It's not a great deal as he is only benefits as he is still not working but I can make good use of a few more pounds. Especially as I am in the process of renewing my provisional license that will enable me to have driving lessons. I am going to get a move on with that in the spring and it is a rather terrifying thought for me right now, but I do want to do it deep down as I know it will be beneficial to us all as a family.
Tomorrow we are going to Canterbury. Bf's sister is going back to uni so we are all going to take her. I've never been and I'm looking forward to it. I'd like to see the Cathedral and the city.
I better be off as a hungry bellyed little man is calling!
