James and Jake

27 February 2009 11:53 am

I have done as I said I would and yesterday I gave James a proper breakfast. He had one of the baby pots of porridge and he SO loved it bless him. So much so that I gave him half a pot as I didn't want to overdo it and when it was gone he cried. So being a soft mummy, I gave him the rest of the pot thinking I could throw any waste away. But what waste? He finished the whole thing!!! Once again he cried when it was gone but he soon calmed down. He really did love it. I cooked him a carrot for lunch and mashed it up but he was not at all impressed with that. I will try that again next week though. I'm just happy that he is getting one meal a day now. James managed to sleep through the night for the first time in more than a week and a half too. We were still up at 6am though which I am quite happy with. I can put up with that. He has a bottle then and his breakfast at 9am then another bottle about 2 hours after that so he is doing very well.

It's been ages since I mentioned Jake. He's our little cat. He's black and white and we have had him since October 2006. Well, last Friday I fed him in the morning as normal. That was the last we saw of him. The weekend came and went as did Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday I said to bf, I don't think we're going to see him again. He's a cat and being a cat is independent and will often go missing for a day or two at a time. He's never been gone for 5 full days though so I was starting to accept that he had probably met his maker as we live near some fairly busy roads. Yesterday however, Jake turns up at the patio door as we are eating our dinner. Immediately I notice a nasty looking cut behind his ear. I can't look too closely as he seems a little scared and reluctant to get too close to us so we give him some food and space. Later in the evening he is rather cuddly so I go in for a closer inspection. I say to bf, it looks like it was a nasty cut to the ear. He agrees. I then add that it also looks like he's had a lot of fur removed from the back of his ear and it looks very clean like he may have had some vet treatment. Bf agreed immediately and said he thought that when we first saw him. Jake still wanted to go out last night and was back to his normal self this morning being at the door just before 8am ready for his breakfast.

I've thought for a long time that he has another family looking after him. He has always been looked after and although I am not stingy with the food, I don't over feed him either. However, he does seem quite a big cat. He has even come home once all fluffy and smelling nice as though someone has bathed him. Now I suspect that this "other family" found he was injured and took him to the vet and were advised to keep him in for a few days for his wound to recover. He seems even better today and his wound is healing fast. I'm just thankful that someone else is being so good to him. I know cats are scavengers, semi wild and will eat anywhere so as long as he is looked after between us all and seems happy then I'm quite happy knowing that he has 2 homes. I can't get too possessive over him as he really is his own little character. He's just a very lucky cat with the best of both worlds.
